Over the 2018-2019 Winter Break, the Valley Forge Patriot wrestlers kept busy. On Friday and Saturday December 21-22, VFHS wrestlers won a total of 29 matches at the Eastlake North Wrestling tournament. Placing for the Patriots at Eastlake North were Michael Miller (2nd @132), John Hoehn (5th @195), and Manch Gamache (5th @220).
Following the Christmas holiday, the Patriot wrestlers were able to win another ten matches at the Maple Heights Holiday Wrestling tournament. Placing at Maple Heights were Michael Miller (2nd @132), Nidal Abukhalil (3rd @182), Manch Gamache (5th @220), and Daniel Lehmann (6th @ 106).
On the last Friday of Winter Break, January 5th, the Patriots traveled to Thomas Harvey High School in Painseville to compete in a dual. In what turned out to be a very exciting match, the Patriots were able to mount a come-from-behind victory over the hosting Red Raiders. After giving up two forfeits and losing two more matches to start the dual, the Patriots were down 21-0 heading into the 138-pound match. Senior Michael Miller was able to secure a pin @138, closing the scoring gap to 21-6. After losing another match at 145 pounds, the Valley Forge Patriots were down 27-6. Junior Sahaj Walia and Senior Avi Walia put a couple of wins together back-to-back to close the score to 27-13 (S. Walia won 12-10 @152 and A. Walia won 11-1 @160). After forfeiting another weight, the Patriots were down 33-13 heading into the final four bouts. Two quick pins by seniors Nidal Abukhalil @182 (1:36) and John Hoehn @195 (0:49) closed the gap to 33-25. Senior Manch Gamache continued the Patriot comeback with a 9-8 victory in the 220-pound weight class, putting the team score at 33-28. Sophomore Will Loepp was able to complete the Patriot comeback with a win by DQ at 5:36, ending the dual meet with a score of 34-33 in favor of the visiting Valley Forge Patriots.
