The Patriots welcome back a large group of returning starters. Offensively, the Patriots welcome back an elite group from last year. Current Juniors Kentrell Marks and Antwan Torres will continue to ignite the offense behind senior returner QB Zach Ansbro. Patriots also received Junior transfer Eddie Starks who adds explosiveness to the offense as well as athletic play on defense. Marks who is currently ranked 9th in the state of Ohio will be featured at RB along with a multitude of other positions. Marks will continue to build on electrifying plays from last season. He is the perfect mix of speed, power and athleticism.
Torres, another Junior sensation will also be featured at RB and a number of positions. Torres is known for his tremendous speed and “smoothness.” Torres was key last season in securing Patriot victories with key first downs. Coach DeAngelis provided insight, “Having both those guys together on the same field for two more years is pretty exciting. You may be able to stop one of them but stopping both could be problematic for a lot of teams, It will be fun to watch.” The Patriots also return another Junior sensation and standout wrestler Anthony Janowski. Janowski who was featured as a starter on defense will now be looked at to replace senior standout Mike Pappas. “ To add Anthony to the mix of skill guys we have coming back is huge for us, he is a great runner, hits the hole fast and is strong. He runs our system like he is reading the manual, he is always making the right cut”.
Current senior captain and starting QB Zach Ansbro will continue to provide his leadership and gritty style of play at QB. “ We are looking forward to opening things up this year through the air with Zach. He made some really good throws last year, and we have some great targets coming back,” said coach DeAngeis. Ansboro made key throws and plays on his feet to help the Patriots have another successful season.
Senior Julius Sebille also returns as a 3 year starter. Julius will also be featured at several positions. Sebille was a standout tight end and defensive end this past season, making a handful of big plays with his hands and pressuring opposing QBs. The Patriots will look more to Sebille’s athleticism for added fire power this year.
The offensive Line only graduates one player, senior standout Isaiah Kammer, but all others will be returning. Max Dieye, Logan Mahood, Tim Vanier, and Tim Mckinley will all be returning seniors on the O-line. “Our line is often undersized, but don’t be fooled, these guys are tough and execute our system efficiently. Our line has produced 1,000 yd plus rushers these last three seasons, that’s really telling of the job they do”. Current sophomores Frank Boscarello and Joey Vasil will provide great depth for the Patriot line this season.
On the Defensive side of the ball, the Patriots also return a big list of names. Torres and Marks will man the secondary along with Junior AJ Agosto. Torres who was a standout corner last season will return to his spot along with stints at Free Safety. Marks who primarily started at Outside Linebacker will be used more in the secondary this season, especially at Free Safety. Agosto will be playing both corner and safety. Now with the addition of Starks, VF has a strong deep unit in the secondary. “Our secondary will be very athletic, those guys made a ton of plays for us, and I know they will continue to play at a high level,” said DeAngelis.
The line backing core will be led by current junior and returning starter, Werner Scheffler. Scheffler with a huge frame of 6ft 235 LBS, was a wrecking ball last season making plays for the Patriot defense. Scheffler’s size and power are keys to his play, along with his speed, “you typically don’t see guys that big move that quick. Werner is that prototypical inside backer everyone is looking for, he has size and strength to take on blocks and plug up those running lanes but also has that speed to chase plays down, I am really excited to watch him for two more years”. Josh Engle will also step in to the line backing core, his combination of speed and strength will be the perfect compliment to the Patriot backers. Junior Malachi Tate will also be apart of the line backing Core this season.
The defensive line will bring back 3 starters: Dieye, Sebille, and Darian Sutton. Senior Will Loepp will step into a starting role this season, his size and strength should secure the interior of the Patriot defense.
